Kung Fu Monkey: RERUNS: "Wait, Arent You Scared?"
Maybe it's just, I cast my eyes back on the last century ...FDR: Oh, I'm sorry, was wiping out our entire Pacific fleet supposed to intimidate us? We have nothing to fear but fear itself, and right now we're coming to kick your ass with brand new destroyers riveted by waitresses. How's that going to feel?
CHURCHILL: Yeah, you keep bombing us. We'll be in the pub, flipping you off. I'm slapping Rolls-Royce engines into untested flying coffins to knock you out of the skies, and then I'm sending angry Welshmen to burn your country from the Rhine to the Polish border.
US. NOW: BE AFRAID!! Oh God, the Brown Bad people could strike any moment! They could strike ... NOW!! AHHHH. Okay, how about .. NOW!! AAGAGAHAHAHHAG! Quick, do whatever we tell you, and believe whatever we tell you, or YOU WILL BE KILLED BY BROWN PEOPLE!! PUT DOWN THAT SIPPY CUP!!
... and I'm just a little tired of being on the wrong side of that historical arc.
Yeah, it's a rerun of his, but oh so relevant..

Obama booting lobbyists from federal advisory panels
“It's taken me years to learn what the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade is,” said Robert Vastine, a lobbyist for the Coalition of Service Industries who also serves as chairman of a trade advisory board.
Boo-fucking-hoo.
Lobbyists are going to lose their special access, influence and in some cases, second paychecks, and federal regulators are going to have to do more of their own research on the areas they're responsible for regulating and not be spoon-fed by the special interest groups.

Child's Play 2009 Drive is underway
Tycho, on the Penny Arcade news page:
Child's Play 2009 is GO
It's back! The ultimate in friction-free, ultra-lightweight charity engines is here, ready to transform the slightest movements of your finger into much-needed respite for young people. Here's what's up:
We've got New Hospitals this year, a tender cross-section of facilities you've directed us to over the past year. Focus your Charity Beam on Dayton, Cleveland, Colorado Springs, Boise, Memphis, or (for Canadian readers) Victoria, Ottawa and St. John's. The Sponsors you see on the main page have gotten the ball rolling to the tune of two-hundred and sixty thousand dollars. Not a bad take before the thing even starts, huh?
Don't forget our annual Charity Dinner and Auction, which is reliably fun, productive, and delicious. We've also spun up a Twitter feed (@CPCharity) to keep you up to speed with the community's unstoppable charitable assault.

World of Warcraft Raid for the Cure
On October 28th of 2009, Julie, a member of the World of Warcraft guild Sidhe Devils on Kael’thas (US), revealed to us that she had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Her first treatment is scheduled to begin on November 9th.
To show our support and love for Julie while she takes on this new challenge, her friends in Sidhe Devils are organizing an event within the game of World of Warcraft that we’re calling the Raid for the Cure.
What it is
On Kael’thas (US), a united cross-faction walk across Azeroth will be held on Saturday, November 14th, starting at 2:00 PM Central Time (Kael’thas-US server time).
Members of both Alliance and Horde factions are invited to attend. Pink Mageweave Shirts will be handed out for all walkers, and all levels of characters will be welcome. If you’d like, bring your own shirt, or even make it a formal affair with your Festive Pink Dress!
The walk across Azeroth will not be a race of individuals, it will be a group march to show Julie our love and support.
We do want to help spread the word, and encourage donations in a cheerful way to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity, an organization that promotes information and awareness on early detection and treatment of breast cancer, and that supports funding for treatment and research towards a cure.

Video games partly to blame for Richmond HS gang rape - San Francisco Chronicle
Take the poverty-driven frustration of inner-city Richmond, a youth street culture that glorifies thugs and applauds degradation of women, and the desensitization of young men through violent video games, music and language, and you have a template for trouble.
I thought we were past scapegoating video games for violent behavior but apparently not, according to SFGate's report on the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl at Richmond High School last week.
In addition to video games, the following items were cited as contributing to the attack:
- poor lighting
- the victim 'trying too hard to please the school's bad boys.'
- lack of fences
- 'street culture'
I have an idea, let's blame the fucking anti-social deviants that beat and raped a girl for 2-1/2 hours and left her semiconscious underneath a picnic table (and maybe drop Kevin Fagan a line and let him know what an awesome job he did writing that article: kfagan@sfchronicle.com )
There are plenty of people that grow up in situations as bad, or worse, and they somehow manage to avoid luring a girl into a dark courtyard to gang rape her.

Penny Arcade's Tycho on the black arts required to get Borderlands PC multiplayer up and running
I chose the PC version, which I don't regret, because its comparatively stratospheric resomolutions do the game's art an incredible service. I did run aground on some port forwarding at first, which is apparently the cosmic tradeoff. After an hour or so of bullshit, which included a host of router perforations as well sequence of voodoo-like rituals culled from innumerable fora, I was finally able to enter a game with a friend. At this point, I'd played the game so much by myself that it was not a multiplayer game at all, so when he manifested in that inviolate space I almost didn't know how to react. I imagine it was something like the first two humans to ever look upon one another; there was suspicion, fear, and ultimately rage. I had to come to terms with the idea that I was not the only protagonist, which is - and let's be honest - suboptimal.
port forwarding = 'router perforations'
I love it. That man certainly has a way with words.
I ended up following the readme and forwarding:
7777 TCP/UDP
28900 TCP
27900 UDP
28910 TCP
when that still didn't work, someone on the forums mentioned that Gamespy required 6500 UDP also to be forwarded. Once I rebooted the router (Apple Time Capsule) I was able to host/invite, etc.
Hoping an update brings UPnP so more people can/will host.

R.I.P. Bob Wilkins
As a someone that grew up in the bay area during the 70s, I can tell you that one of my favorite memories was staying up late (by hook or by crook) and watching Creature Features every weekend. I think it's a big reason that I'm such a big SciFi fan.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 24 in Oakland's Montclair Presbyterian Church
